European International School: Innovative Language Programs

Education - Saigon/HCMC: Oct. 31, 2016

European International School Ho Chi Minh City (EIS) continues to focus on world-class language and innovation programmes with talented new teaching staff. Eighteen new faculty members joined the staff of EIS this August. Each brings a unique international perspective, as well as specific knowledge and experience that will contribute directly to the school’s commitment to academic quality, multilingualism and innovation.

Languages

Five new teachers will enhance EIS’s language learning programme. Phan Thi Lan, the incoming Vietnamese Subject Area Leader, previously taught Vietnamese for eight years at the International School Ho Chi Minh City. Corinna Hedges, Eugenia Diarra and Daniel Kaufhold have extensive training and experience teaching German, while Zita Szigeti brings 15 years of experience teaching English to International Baccalaureate (IB), Middle Years (MYP) and Diploma Programme (DP) students.

Science

The newly refurbished science labs will gain two new teachers dedicated to inspiring innovation, the World Topic that drives academic inquiry at EIS. Gordon Stewart will teach MYP Science and DP Biology, while Gavin Machell will share his expertise with students in MYP Science and DP Chemistry. Mr. Machell will also serve as University Counsellor for Grade 12 students, who will become the first graduating class from EIS.

Art & Design

To encourage artistic innovation and make full use of the school’s newly expanded design studios, EIS hired art teacher Lee Simpson and design specialist Adam David Barnes. Both bring an international perspective to their creative work, having taught in England, Egypt, Nepal and China.

Excellence in Education

EIS conducted a global search for the new teachers with a particular emphasis on teacher quality. Together, the new faculty members hold nine Master’s degrees, six Postgraduate Certificates in Education, and all have subject-matter degrees from prestigious universities as well as many years of experience teaching in international schools.

Three of the new faculty are also IB examiners. Ms. Szigeti, Mr. Stewart and Ajay Kaushik, who will teach MYP and DP Maths, will contribute their deep understanding of the IB curriculum to enrich the IB programmes offered at EIS.

“We are excited to welcome these exceptional new teachers,” said Iain Fish, Head of School. “Their diversity, dedication and depth of experience will benefit our students and enhance our programme. All of us at EIS, teachers and students alike, look forward to learning from them.”
