Nurturing Young Learners as Proactive Self-protectors

Safeguarding and protecting students at ISSP is key to learning and wellbeing

One of the most critical aspects of providing a holistic education experience is providing young learners with a safe and secure environment for learning and development. At International School Saigon Pearl (ISSP), we are committed to the welfare and wellbeing of both our students and educators who spend most of their time in school premises. In our increasingly digital and connected world, protecting children is a complex task which often extends beyond the classroom and time in school.

ISSP

Safeguarding at school starts with select individuals

First and foremost, International School Saigon Pearl believes that safety in the classroom begins with selecting suitable educators who love and care for young learners. Stringent recruitment procedures ensure that our potential candidates undertake local authority checks and pre-employment police appraisal from previous countries they may have resided in, before detailed resumes, reference checks and an extensive interview process are combined to ensure that only the best people are employed to work with our young learners. Furthermore, all ISSP professionals receive regular training and updates relating to student safety, with particular emphasis being placed on practical research and techniques relevant to our times.

When safeguarding concerns arise, be it on campus or elsewhere, ISSP staff members are fully aware of, and obligated to follow, our safeguarding procedures that ensure all concerns are communicated directly to the school’s Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL). This ensures that every student is at ease to communicate their worries to every adult who works in the school campus, creating a psychological safe haven and an environment conducive to learning.

E-safety indispensable in digital times

With recent global developments, ISSP believes that E-Safety has never been more important. Children now spend an astounding 50% of their time at home on the internet and on social media, increasing the potential occurrence of cyberbullying and other negative actions that may be related to ease of communication in the digital realm. In fact, statistics from the i-SAFE foundation suggest that more than 25% of adolescents have experienced bullying through mobile platforms. It is therefore essential for our educators to be trained to quickly identify signs of abuse, which may not be as obvious as traditional classroom bullying. With a myriad of web content and portals used in modern education as sources of research, learning and communication, International School Saigon Pearl’s safeguarding team works closely with campus IT professionals to select relevant online filters and third party software, keeping e-learning stress-free and as simple as possible for both students and teachers.

Nurturing Young Learners as Proactive Self-protectors

The art of self-protection is a skill that ought to be imparted to every young learner at an early stage in mental development. As such, ISSP strives to provide every child with the means to deal with challenging behaviour, inappropriate physical contact and peer pressure should they be exposed to it.

ISSP

Nurturing self-resilience in young learners is a big part of ensuring children are able to process and address a wide range of problems, and ISSP’s programme incorporates key values that help children to become confident when dealing with difficult situations. Expertly developed lessons educate students to be aware of potential dangers, such as strangers, or other people who may wish to cause them harm, but that is just a small part of the work that we do to help our students to become proactive self-protectors. By communicating with students about bullying, digital safety, conflict resolution and many other topics, we are able to teach them that ISSP in itself is a “safe space” where everyone is respected and cared about.

Seamless Integration of Wellbeing and Mental Development

The importance of student well being is well known to all staff at ISSP, and everyone is fully committed to the development of what has so far been a decade long programme of Safeguarding and Child Protection.

As with all responsible educational institutions, ISSP maintains thorough student attendance records, as truancy and missing classes are often one of the first-signs of declining wellbeing and mental health in learners aged 6 - 12. However, all employees are expected to keep student information confidential, and private details are only discussed with relevant individuals and when the need arises.

ISSP

ISSP also prioritises an active dialogue with parents and guardians, working in close partnership with them to ensure appropriate support is always available for young learners. To aid the building of a strong relationship between parents and staff, ISSP regularly organises workshops to provide an opportunity to discuss any concern that parents may have relating to student and campus safety.

To further facilitate excellent communication channels, parents and visitors are welcomed to the campus because ISSP knows that meeting in person helps to create a bond. However, all visitors are required to wear a visitors badge when entering the campus to ensure student safety. The school site is also closely monitored by a 24 hour security team and CCTV camera system.

With such a huge emphasis on campus wellbeing and safety, International School Saigon Pearl (ISSP) is thus not only the premiere choice for elementary early childhood education in Ho Chi Minh City, but also a choice that will reward you and your family for many years to come. Enrich your childrens’ lives through ISSP’s multi-faceted and value-added curriculum that spans beyond the classroom. Moreover, more than 85% of our students achieve a grade beyond international standards for English and Mathematics.
