With a colourful facade that jumps out amongst less ornate neighbours, Saigon's Mariamman Hindu Temple seems out of context. Inside, the atmosphere is lively and the powerful smell of incense hangs in the air. The temple is named after the goddess Mariamman, worshipped for miraculous powers including curing heat-based diseases and helping people find good spouses. There are two other Hindu Temples in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City.
Conveniently located near Ben Thanh Market, Mariamman Hindu Temple was built by traders from Tamil Nadu, an Indian state, in the late 19th century. Keep your camera at the quick because both inside and outside the temple are marvelous photo ops. Statues of Mariamman plaster the outer temple walls. Inside, more statues pepper the hallways. Please remember to remove your shoes before stepping up onto the raised podium.
