Saigon: A Hot Destination for Solo Travel

Daily News - Saigon/HCMC: June 30, 2017

Exploring exotic parts of the world solo is a popular trend among globetrotters, and Saigon is turning out to be one of the best destinations among travellers setting out on their own.

Friendliest Destination

New data from Airbnb, an accommodation service that allows people to either list their homes for short-term rentals or to look for a home for a temporary stay, show that HCMC is one of the friendliest destinations for solo travelers.

Solo bookings in Saigon surged 146 percent last year, second only to Cancun in Mexico, as reported by the U.K. lifestyle magazine Good Housekeeping.

Only One of Two Asian Cities

The only other Asian city that made the top 10 list was Busan in South Korea. The other destinations on the list are Cologne, Germany; Johannesburg, South Africa; Sao Paulo, Brazil; Auckland, New Zealand and Charlotte, North Carolina.

Saigon plans to add 1,000 rooms this year and expects tourist arrivals to grow another 15 percent to six million visitors, according to a report released last month by JLL Hotels and Hospitality Group.

One of The Cheapest Too

Saigon was also ranked the world’s third-cheapest city in April by Price of Travel, a travel cost database. On average, backpackers only need US$18.33 a day for meals, beer, accommodation, public transport and entrance fees to top attractions.

Tourists generally enjoy the contrast of a modern commercial centre with historical sites such as the War Remnants Museum and the Independence Palace.
