The first thing to consider is how to get to Hue. There is an airport near town, but if you are travelling in the high season, it can be difficult to arrange a flight. The number of planes flying in is restricted so reserve a seat as soon as a possible.

There is also a train station in Hue with daily connections from Danang and Hanoi. For those operating on their own schedule, renting a motorbike in Danang and driving yourself up can be an exhilarating ride. Rated as one of the best coastal highways in the world, this road is a phenomenal albeit dangerous journey.

Injuring yourself in a foreign land is never a comforting idea, but do not despair: Hue has a reputation for one of the best public hospitals in the country. While the facilities may not be up to international standards, they get the job done.

Keep in mind that some of the locals have an entitlement that comes with being descendents of a royal line. They may be curt or attempt to overcharge you, so keep your wits about you and be sure to negotiate every price. Crime is typically non-violent, but still present.
