Travel guide to Dalat

Dalat Vietnam is a slice of Europe in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. Mild temperatures, an attractive landscape of lush gardens, lakes, rolling hills and the oldest golf course in the country make it popular with travellers today.
The market is worth a visit for its Dalat wine, preserves and candied strawberries. Be sure to go upstairs, as the second floor houses food stalls which make for a tasty and cheap meal. Dalat Palace Golf Club is the oldest and perhaps most beautiful course in the country. During the week, it is almost deserted, making you feel like you’ve got the whole course to yourself. Afterwards, head across the lake to the Dalat Palace hotel for a true colonial landmark.
Dalat is also famous for its numerous waterfalls and lakes. Most impressive is the 30m Pongour Waterfall. Located 45km from Dalat, it is a bit of a hike and due to an upstream dam, it has slowed to a trickle. In the dry season, you can take in the view from atop a vertigo-inducing cliff.
Don’t forget to check out the Crazy House, Emperor Bao Dai’s summer palace and the XQ centre and village. For a taste of adventure, you could try visiting the area with Easy Riders, guides that take you around on motorbikes. Meet them near the Peace Hotel on Truong Cong Dinh.

Alternately dubbed the City of Love and Le Petit Paris, Dalat has a distinctly French influence, from the strong cafe culture to the approximation of the Eiffel Tower perched over the main square. It is a town perfect for strolling, small and condensed with enough streets and scenery to keep your eyes occupied.

Local life in Dalatrevolves around the central market, a hub of activity from the early morning rush all the way through dinner. Famous for its fresh produce, be sure to investigate some of Dalat’s signature crops.

Lush conditions echo throughout the area, resulting in a dizzying collection of manicured gardens, wild woods, sweeping plantations and hidden mountain retreats. Many attractions such as Datlana Waterfall are nestled into pine forests, within a day hike’s reach.

For the religiously minded, there is a selection of stunning pagodas to choose from and a few leftover French churches. Not ones to skimp on decoration, the French touch is evident, present also in the two towering palaces, Bao Dai Summer Palace and Dalat Palace. Classical reminders of the city’s initial status as a getaway for Vietnam’s upper crust, pay a visit to the glory of the past.
